Pocono Mountain students earn awards at PA Junior Academy of Science Comp

Pocono Mountain School District students put their science research to the test and walked away winners at the 47^th Annual Regional Meeting of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition at Kings College, March 8.

Sixteen students from Pocono Mountain East High School and 17 students from Swiftwater Intermediate School won first awards in their area of research at the science competition, earning the chance to compete at state level at Penn State in May.

The following students from PM East High School earned first awards:

Michelle Eller, 9^th Grade
Matt Korczak, 9^th Grade
Nick Marshall, 9^th Grade, also received an Excellence Award in Physics
Rachel Salmon, 9^th Grade, also received an Excellence Award in Earth Science
Biren Desai, 10^th Grade
John Ferrand, 10^th Grade
Taylor Frazier, 10^th Grade
Joanne Gamble, 10^th Grade
Emily Paulus, 10^th Grade
Nicole Seese, 10^th Grade
Jared Yarnall-Schane, 10^th Grade
Sarah Halstead, 11^th Grade
Emily Smith, 11^th Grade, also received an Excellence Award in Physics
Lauren Jescovitch, 12^th Grade
Alex Meramo, 12^th Grade, also received an $8,000 scholarship from Kings College
Torrey Salmon, 12^th Grade, also received the Advisory Board Award of $500 in cash

Students began preparing for this science competition in September. The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science at PM East High School and Swiftwater Intermediate School provides opportunities for students to stretch their intellectual proficiency. The program challenges students to conduct research and present their findings in the same manner as professional scientists. Students must use scientific methodology to conduct and analyze self designed experiments. The results of their experiment work are then defended to a panel of judges. The participants gain valuable experience in the use of science research techniques, organizational skills, and public speaking.
