Building a Foundation for Success

Pocono Mountain Academy opened in September, 1998 in the building which was once Coolbaugh Learning Center in Tobyhanna. Today, the Academy resides in Cresco, in the building which was once the Barrett Elementary Center. Students from grades 9 through 12 are recommended for admission to the Academy by their teachers and guidance counselors. A smaller group of 150 students will work on graduation requirements through an integrated curriculum comprised of basic grade level courses of study, study of individual topics of interest, and community interaction. Students participate in many hands-on experiences throughout all subject areas. Freshmen and sophomores participate in service-learning projects designed to introduce them to various career opportunities. These experiences are enhanced in the junior and senior years, as students participate in internships and actual job experiences for credit. Students will graduate from the Academy with a high school diploma from Pocono Mountain. The ability of the Academy faculty to integrate work related skills with academic requirements for high school graduation is one of the most promising features of the Academy.
