Academy Suspension Program

Academy Suspension Program

While not a formal part of the Academy High School Program, the Academy Suspension Program (ASP) plays an important role in assisting students in grades 8 and 9 who attend West Junior High School and East High School.  The ASP offers an alternative to the traditional out-of-school suspension for those 8th and 9th graders.  During the term of the out-of-school suspension, the student, instead of being at home, is transported by the District to the Academy.  At the Academy, a special room and teacher is dedicated to assisting the student in remaining current in his/her schoolwork through communication with the student’s teachers.  Students also have the opportunity to work with the teacher and the guidance counselor to discuss and problem solve other ways to have handled the situation that resulted in his/her suspension.  The goals are: (1) to ensure that students understand that some behaviors will result in removal from the school setting; (2) to reduce student failure as a result of missing class; and (3) to assist students in learning appropriate ways to handle situations in the school setting.
