Pathways
The Pocono Mountain School District now requires each and every student to demonstrate that he/she is “proficient” in math and reading prior to earning a Pocono Mountain Diploma. Proficiency is determined by test scores on the “PSSA” (Pennsylvania State System of Assessment). In the spring of Junior year, each student in Pennsylvania takes the PSSA’s in math and reading. Scores fall into 4 possible categories: below basic, basic, proficient, and advanced. Students who score in the below basic or basic category must participate in the Pathways program as an alternative method of demonstrating proficiency. Pathways consists of after school tutoring during senior year designed specifically to remediate students in the areas of reading and math in which they were not proficient. Students who did not take the PSSA test at all must demonstrate proficiency in all areas in order to qualify for a Pocono Mountain diploma.
