| SUMMER SCHOOL
Summer school is conducted for the intermediate students. Operation of summer school will follow Board policies and regulations. The operation of summer school shall not be in conflict in any way with the administration of the regular school sessions of the district. Summer school is five weeks in length and is held during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. daily. Successful completion of summer school depends on student attendance, successful class work and the completion of curricular expectations and assignments. If a student does not complete the summer school assignment successfully, they will need to repeat the grade level work he/she had failed during the subsequent school year.
Students who fail three core subject areas will not be able to attend summer school. Seventh and Eighth grade students who fail three core areas may be considered for intensive summer school. Seventh grade students who fail three or more core areas and attend intensive summer school after their seventh grade year and then go on to fail three or more content area subjects in eighth grade will not be able to attend intensive summer school a second time and will have to repeat the eighth grade. Summer school offerings are provided for students in the content areas of Reading, Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies.
Students who fail a course during the school year and have a minimum grade average of 55 with team recommendation may be assigned to summer school for remediation toward a passing average of 70 for the course. The principal may grant exceptions to the minimum grade of 55.
INTENSIVE SUMMER SCHOOL
• Intensive summer school is only for intermediate school students.
• Intensive summer school is a six week program that was developed to address the needs of a growing number of students who have not experienced success in the regular classroom setting; students who have failed at least three classes and have been recommended by their guidance counselor or building administrator as having difficulty in the school setting, are recommended for the program.
• With a teaching team of three teachers and a maximum of 45 students, the program focuses on skill development in reading and math while incorporating study skills into the instruction.
• Differentiated instruction is utilized to present content, which covers a variety of curricular areas and grade levels to accommodate a wide range of skills.
• Students also engage in a variety of activities that focus on development of the skills of self-evaluation, decision making, communication, building consensus and self-perception.
• Daily four-hour classes allow for and provide both the time and opportunity to prepare students for re-entry into the upcoming academic year with a stronger skill base and a greater desire to learn.
• Recommendations are made regarding placement and promotion based on skill development and student performance throughout the summer program.
