West Jr HS student places 5th at MathCounts

WJHS 8th Grader Daniel Martinez

Pocono Mountain West Junior High School 8th grader, Daniel Martinez, was recognized as one of the top scoring students in the Lehigh Valley Chapter Regional MathCounts Tournament on Saturday, February 9.

After the written round, Daniel was in 8th place; however in MathCounts, each of the top ten students must defend their place against other top scoring students using complex math questions, on stage using a buzzer. After defeating four other students, Daniel's final place was 5th out of approximately 200 of the best math students from the Lehigh Valley and Poconos. He was just one place away from qualifying for state finals.

Additionally, Matthew Altemose, a sixth grader from Tobyhanna Elementary Center was also in the top 45 students, scoring 42nd overall and the second highest score for Pocono Mountain SD in the competition.
