Odyssey of the Mind
OOTM is a creative problem solving competition that integrates music, acting, set/costume design science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Teams of students work together to solve problems and present their solutions in competitions at the regional, state and international level. In 2022 East Junior High School advanced two teams to the competition! Our Problem 1 team solved the Escape Vroom challenge. The team engineered three vehicles that completed four tasks. They presented their solution through a humorous skit complete with a script, set and costumes all created by the students! Our Problem 1 engineers took first place in the NEPA Region, 1st place in the State of Pennsylvania and 13th place in the World!
Our Problem 5 team solved the Life is A Circus Problem. The students wrote and performed an original script, including original songs, dances, acrobatics, and circus acts complete with sets, costumes and props all created from mostly recycled materials. Our Problem 5 actors took first place in the NEPA Region, 3rd place in the State of Pennsylvania and 5th place in the World!

Pennsylvania Envirothon is a fun, academic event that challenges students to think critically about the natural world and their roles in it.

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science
The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science provides an opportunity for students with an interest in scientific research to stretch their intellectual proficiency. The program is open to students in grades 7 through 12. Students compete against established criteria and are awarded first, second, third, or honorable mention awards based on their adherence to that criterion. Students earning a first award at the Regional Competition in March have the opportunity to sharpen their presentation and enter it in the PJAS State Competition in May.
In preparation for the regional meeting, students select a research topic in science, math, or computer science. The student will design and conduct their own experiment. They will collect data, interpret that data, and prepare a formal presentation.

'What's So Cool About Manufacturing?'
Our club is to showcase a local manufacturer highlighting mass production and the opportunities for careers. We will go on a field trip, film the manufacturer and then edit and comprise a 2 minute video promoting the business.
This year we have added a new endeavor, manufacturing our own PMSD shirts to be awarded to students who might meet certain teachers requirements, like Junior Scientist, or best sportsmanship, mathematician in training, etc. I will be open to suggestions and club members could help with the categories.
