    What is PRIDE?

Pocono Mountain East High School’s PRIDE initiative is a facet of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a research-based, highly effective, framework for creating, teaching, and reinforcing students’ social, emotional, and academic learning skills to improve and sustain academic achievement and the mental and emotional well-being of all students. All school staff use the PBIS’s framework and positive approach in all school settings. The goal of PBIS is to establish a predictable, consistent, and positive school culture for all students and staff. PBIS schools focus on prevention, intercede to correct individual student behavior “miscues,” and acknowledge students who model the expected behavior. Students and staff spend time at the beginning of the school year, and as needed throughout the year, engaging in lessons on expected behavior and effective ways to demonstrate those behaviors in various locations in the school to make the high school a safe and positive learning environment. Students are expected to model the character traits of the acronym PRIDE: Prepared, Respectful, Involved, Dependable, and Empathetic.

    There are
    four main elements in PBIS:

    • Outcomes: academic and behavior targets that are endorsed and emphasized by students, families, and educators. (What is important to each particular learning community?)
    • Practices: interventions and strategies that are evidence based. (How will you reach the goals?)
    • Data: information that is used to identify status, need for change, and effects of interventions. (What data will you use to support your success or barriers?)
    • Systems: supports that are needed to enable the accurate and durable implementation of the practices of PBIS. (What durable systems can be implemented that will sustain this over the long haul?)

    PRIDE Points

Students can earn PRIDE Points by exhibiting the qualities outlined by PRIDE (prepared, respectful, involved, dependable, empathetic). PRIDE Points are physical, paper tickets awarded by teachers and other school staff. Students can use their PRIDE Points to enjoy rewards, enter raffles, and "purchase" school supplies and snacks from the school store cart.

Incentives are held throughout the year to celebrate students who have consistently exhibited PRIDE. In order to participate, students must meet specific criteria with regard to behavior, academics, and attendance.
