• Volunteers in Education (VIE) Program

The Volunteers in Education (VIE) program was created in 2004 and piloted by the Pocono Mountain West High School. The purpose of the program is to provide instructional support and assistance to students and teachers by utilizing community volunteers. There are many ways that volunteers can help in schools. The duties of a volunteer may include, but are not limited to working one-on-one with a student or with small groups of students who need remedial help in academic subjects to reinforce basic skills. Volunteers can also help non-English speaking students increase their skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing English.

Qualifying senior citizens of the Pocono Mountain School District may earn a tax credit of up to $1,000 for their volunteer services at the Junior High or High School level. The rebate program is open to residents of the District who are 60 years of age or older and who pay school property taxes to the District. The VIE program is also open to residents that would like to volunteer, even if they do not meet the criteria for receiving a rebate.
